Fetch Quest was my first group game that I made, and I have some very fond memories from it. It was definitely difficult, especially the wall jump mechanic, but I was pretty happy with how it turned out for a first game. Looking back, there’s a tonne of optimisation that could be made, but it was a fun way to experiment with a 2D platformer.
I’d originally had an idea to create a co-op two player game, where you both play as a pet animal, and you’re trying to find and rescue your missing owner. However, this was way too much scope for a first game, and we cut it back to be a single player game, with just one pet. When we were trying to decide between a dog and a cat, the name Fetch Quest got suggested, and we couldn’t pass up on that opportunity to make it about a dog playing fetch!
